Admission to bachelor’s degree studies for EU students

If you've studied compulsory secondary education in any of the EU countries, Switzerland, Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, Andorra or China, or if you have the European Baccalaureate or International Baccalaureate, you do not need to sit the university entrance exam (PAU).

The only requirement is to have accreditation of your diploma and to meet the necessary conditions for access to university studies in your country. Each university sets its own admission criteria, which are applicable both to foreign students and to students holding a diploma from the Spanish education system.

You then need to follow the steps below:

1. The National Distance Learning University (UNED) is responsible for verifying whether you meet the access requirements. Once it has checked that you do, the UNED will assign you a university access ranking and issue a credential, with a top mark of ten points, which gives you the right to access the university. It is valid for two years starting from the date of issue.

2. The university you wish to go to will check whether you fulfil the admission requirements. The universities will decide whether to offer you a place based on the final score obtained in the Bachillerato, or its equivalent.

3. Each university can set its own admission criteria and procedures. Some of these criteria include:

a. Module and subjects taken in the equivalent studies prior to the Bachillerato diploma, and their relationship with the course selected.
b. Marks obtained in specific subjects.
c. Complementary academic or professional training.
d. Previous higher studies.

4. The universities may set tests in English or other foreign languages. They will also rate the various subjects in the curriculum of foreign education systems.

5. The final mark obtained in the Bachillerato will count for at least 60% of the final result in the admission procedure.

If you meet all these requirements you can apply for a place at any Spanish university of your choice.

UNED credential

This credential is equivalent to the general phase of the university entrance exam (PAU). The original credential must always be in your possession, so we recommend you send certified photocopies whenever you are asked for it. The first steps to follow are:

1. Fill in the registration form you will find at the following link: http://portal.uned.es/portal/page?_pageid=93,24305391,93_24305392&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL

2. Print out the application form and send it to this address: Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia: Sección de Acceso-PAU (ACCESO UE). Calle Juan del Rosal, 14 (Ciudad Universitaria) 28040 Madrid-España.

What documentation will you need?

1. Photocopy of your ID card or passport.

2. Certified photocopy of your degree, diploma or certificate showing you meet the access requirements under your country's education system.

3. Certified photocopy of your academic certificate for the last two years of secondary education.

4. Printed copy of your UNED registration, including the corresponding bank receipt showing payment of the fees required for access to university. (Examples no. 1 and 2 of the form, validated and stamped by any branch of the Banco Santander bank network, or proof of the online transaction, or proof of the transfer stamped by the bank). To see the current fees, go to the following link: http://portal.uned.es/portal/page?_pageid=93,25815460&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL

Remember that the certified photocopies must be made in the Associate Centres of the UNED or at the Student Services Centres in Madrid, located at the following addresses:

Paseo Senda del Rey,7
Calle Juan del Rosal, 16
Calle Bravo Murillo, 38

Accreditation by Regional Government Education Departments and authentication of documents by public notary will also be valid. It will sometimes also be possible to accredit documents in the Education Departments of Spanish embassies abroad and in the Embassies/Consulates of different countries in Spain (it is advisable to speak with them beforehand to confirm this possibility).

Things to remember

By 30 June each year, the maximum number of places available for each course in each public university is published for the following academic year.

At least one year in advance the universities will announce the criteria and procedures to be applied for access to the various undergraduate university courses.

The minimum pre-enrolment and registration periods depend on the dates set for the final Bachillerato exam. However, pre-enrolment usually takes place between mid-June and early July. Leave plenty of time to make your decision so you don't miss the deadlines.
